What is microneedling?

Microneedling is a minimally invasive treatment that stimulates collagen production by puncturing the skin with fine, tiny needles. The concept of skin needling dates back to ancient times but microneedling, as we know it today, originated in 1995. The treatment has gained recognition in recent years due in part to social media unveiling the dramatic results. Microneedling is a natural treatment that doesn’t use chemicals, lasers or heat to remove layers of damaged skin. Improvements are the result of new collagen and elastin naturally produced by your own body!

How does microneedling work?

Microneedling works by causing controlled, evenly spaced punctures into the skin to activate the body’s natural healing process. Your body will repair these micro-injuries by producing more collagen and elastin, resulting in smoother, firmer skin. According to the experts at SkinPen, there are three phases to the wound-repair process. The first is inflammation, which occurs after the skin is pierced to trigger the immune system, increase blood flow and begin creating new tissue. The second is proliferation, in which the wound is rebuilt and a new network of blood vessels begins to form. The third is remodeling, where the damaged skin is replaced by new dermal tissues, including fresh collagen and new elastin. A scientifically-backed treatment, microneedling has been proven to boost collagen production and improve a variety of skin concerns:

  • Fine lines and wrinkles
  • Scarring
  • Acne
  • Stretch marks
  • Skin pigmentation issues
  • Uneven tone and texture
  • Large pores

Although commonly used on the face, microneedling can also be used on other areas of the body, such as the neck, arms, chest, legs and abdomen. Your specialists at The Finishing Touch Medspa can help you determine if microneedling is the right procedure for your skin care concerns at your complimentary consultation. Together, we will assess your skin, discuss your goals and form a treatment plan that is right for you.

What are the benefits of microneedling?

Microneedling therapy provides numerous benefits to patients with a variety of skin concerns, regardless of age, skin tone, allergies or sensitivities.

  • Skin is naturally repaired
  • Leaves no marks or scars once healed
  • Different puncture depths to individualize the treatment
  • AQ growth factors improves healing
  • PRP maximizes outcome
  • Immediate and long-lasting results
  • Minimal downtime and short recovery
  • Improves topical product absorption

While many patients will enjoy these benefits after just one treatment, the results of microneedling are cumulative. With regular sessions, your skin will appear noticeably brighter, smoother and younger. A 2008 study found a 400% increase in collagen and elastin production six months after just four microneedling sessions!

What to expect during your treatment

The microneedling process usually takes about 40 minutes, but this varies with each patient. The length of the procedure depends on the areas of concern and the extent of the treatment. Patients often ask if microneedling is painful. Before your treatment, we will apply a topical anesthetic to numb the skin and relieve any potential discomfort. Most patients will only feel the vibrations of the device or a sandpaper-like sensation. At The Finishing Touch Medspa, we use the SkinPen, the first and only FDA-approved microneedling tool. Once your skin is ready, the microneedling device will be moved across your face to treat targeted areas. Your specialist can vary the needle depth depending on your desired results and sensitivity level to target specific skin concerns. We can also apply AQ growth factors to the microchannels created by the microneedling process to improve results and recovery time.

During your microneedling treatment, a small amount of blood will be produced, which has an important role to play. The presence of blood releases cytokines and additional growth factors that regulate wound healing. This further stimulates collagen-producing cells, enhancing the treatment results and shortening the healing process. To build on the beneficial properties of blood, you have the option to add platelet-rich plasma (PRP) injections to your microneedling procedure. Also known as the “vampire facial,” microneedling with PRP includes a blood draw that is processed to isolate the platelet-rich layer. This plasma is full of growth factors and regenerative proteins that supplement wound healing when massaged into the skin during treatment. Microneedling is associated with increased effectiveness and improved outcomes when PRP is added.

What to expect after your treatment

After your microneedling treatment, your skin may be red and sensitive for the next 48 hours, often compared to a mild sunburn. You may also experience dryness, swelling and bruising. These symptoms are normal and indicate that the healing process has begun.

Immediately following your treatment, it’s important not to apply any irritating cleansers, moisturizers or cosmetics to your skin. You may also be advised to avoid NSAIDs and other anti-inflammatory medicines for up to a week; inflammation is an important step in the healing process and should be allowed to occur. You should keep out of direct sunlight and avoid touching, picking or rubbing your skin while it is healing. Your skincare experts at The Finishing Touch Medspa will advise you on how to care for your skin post-microneedling and recommend some of our gentle, non-irritating products to help your skin look and feel great after your treatment.

When will I see results?

Once redness, swelling and inflammation start to subside, you should notice some immediate results. Your skin will feel plump, hydrated and smooth with noticeably improved tone and texture. Microneedling is not a quick fix, however. Since results develop in response to your body’s natural healing process, they will continue to appear as more collagen is produced. Although patients will often see noticeable results after just one session, a minimum of three treatments is often recommended to effectively improve common skin imperfections such as acne scarring. Your skin care specialist at The Finishing Touch Medspa can advise you on the number of treatments you may need and individualize your procedure to ensure your desired results. You should allow some time for your skin to heal between treatments, but microneedling can be repeated safely every four to six weeks.

Who is a good candidate for microneedling?

Microneedling is an extremely safe and effective skin care treatment when performed by experts in a clean, professional setting. Unlike other resurfacing techniques that use lasers or thermal energy, microneedling is not restricted to lighter skin tones and is safe on all skin types. It is often recommended for patients who have allergies or are not good candidates for laser resurfacing due to a risk of hyperpigmentation and scarring. Microneedling is great for most patients, but there are a few exceptions. Clients who may not be a good candidate for microneedling include those who:

  • Are prone to keloids
  • Have problems with wound healing or blood clotting
  • Are suffering from fungal or bacterial infections
  • Do not have a healthy immune system
  • Have active rashes, acne, psoriasis or chronic skin conditions
  • Have skin lesions, raised moles or other skin problems

Patients who have active acne or cysts should wait until their breakouts clear; otherwise, there is a risk that acne-causing bacteria will be forced deeper into the skin. Microneedling is also not performed on sunburned skin. Patients may be asked to abstain from drinking alcohol or using NSAIDs such as ibuprofen in the weeks leading up to your appointment. If you’d like to find out more about microneedling and find out if you’re a good candidate, your skin care experts at The Finishing Touch Medspa can help you learn more about this treatment during your complimentary consultation.
