Dermatologists, plastic surgeons and aestheticians have known for years that light therapy can heal or reduce the look of certain skin conditions. One of those light therapies is BBL™ treatment, or broadband light. Here at The Finishing Touch Medspa, we are proud to offer this cutting-edge cosmetic option and encourage you to learn more about it.
What is BBL™?
BBL™ treatment is a type of intense pulsed light or IPL. IPL is much like laser light but uses a broad spectrum of light, which can be filtered. Like laser, IPL and BBL™ use very precisely targeted pulses of light to heat various skin imperfections. BBL™ is especially effective on areas of uneven pigmentation such as age spots, areas of the skin that have suffered sun damage, and fine lines and wrinkles. It is also useful against rough, uneven skin, and rosacea, a condition of unknown cause characterized by intense flushing of the skin. The wavelength used by BBL™ even kills the bacteria that causes acne.
How It Works
The controlled light pulses of BBL™ heats the upper layers of the epidermis. This both closes up small blood vessels beneath the skin and stimulates the body to start producing more collagen and elastin, which are proteins that keep skin taut and supple. BBL™ can be used to target many parts of the body, including the face, neck, chest, arms, and hands.
What Happens During a Session?
Even before a session, the patient has a consultation with the dermatologist or aesthetician to make sure that they are a good candidate for BBL™ treatment. The patient may be told to stop taking medications that make them photosensitive and to avoid tanning beds and strong sunlight in the period just before and just after the treatment. The vast majority of patients are very pleased with the results of their BBL™ therapy. Some dermatologists recommend that a patient have BBL™ treatment a number of times a year. This slows the aging process and protects the skin against toxins and pollutants.
